Thiruvananthapuram – On World Environment Day, the differently-abled children of the *Different Art Centre* honored the “Grandmother Tree,” an old tamarind tree (*puli maram*) at their center. This tree, which had once lost its leaves, dried up, and appeared to be dying, was brought back to health through Ayurvedic treatment. The children expressed their respect by decorating the tree in an eco-friendly manner.
Their gesture conveyed the important message that not only planting saplings but also nurturing and caring for trees is equally vital. The children also created and exhibited illustrated storyboards that depicted the tree’s decline and its subsequent revival through treatment, which intrigued and impressed visitors.
The Environment Day celebrations were inaugurated by Dr. T.S. Swapna, Head of the Department of Biotechnology, University of Kerala. In her speech, she emphasized that environmental concern should not be limited to a one-day celebration, but instead, people should dedicate a little time every day for the environment.
Dr. Anil Nair, Intervention Director of the Different Art Centre, presided over the function, while Dr. Athira U., Emerging Technology Lead Data Scientist, delivered the keynote address. Magic Planet Manager Sunilraj C.K. gave the welcome speech, and linguist Dr. A.M. Marykutty expressed the vote of thanks.
As part of the celebrations, a special *Green Mango Tree* magic performance and campus-wide plastic-free initiatives led by the differently-abled children were also conducted.
