Inclusive Election 2025: A Symbolic Celebration of Voting Rights for the Differently-Abled

Thiruvananthapuram: Excitement filled the air at the Different Art Centre as differently-abled individuals exercised their voting rights by casting votes for their preferred candidates using an electronic voting machine (EVM) after getting their index fingers inked. The symbolic election held yesterday at the Centre underscored the message that individuals with disabilities are equal stakeholders in democracy.

Organized with the support of the State Chief Electoral Officer's office, the election aimed to ensure representation for differently-abled individuals in the democratic process, just as in every other sphere of life. The election for the positions of President and Prime Minister recorded a polling percentage of 64%, with 13 candidates contesting. Hasna was elected as president, while John Jose was chosen as prime minister.

The election, titled Inclusive Election 2025, was inaugurated by Chief Electoral Officer Dr. Rathan U Kelkar IAS. Speaking at the event, he emphasized that effectively exercising the right to vote is the responsibility of every citizen in a democratic nation. "People aged between 18 and 30 often show a lack of interest in voting. Democracy flourishes when young citizens, among others, actively participate and utilize their voting rights," he remarked. Dr. Kelkar also lauded the initiative by the Different Art Centre, stating that it was a proud moment to witness such an event aimed at raising awareness about the importance of voting.

The event was presided over by Gopinath Muthukad, Executive Director of the Different Art Centre. Additional Chief Electoral Officer Sharmila C delivered the keynote address, while the Director of the Centre, Shyla Thomas, welcomed the attendees. Sunil Raj CK, Operations Manager at Magic Planet, extended the vote of thanks. The differently-abled individuals of the Centre performed the Election Commission's theme song to mark the commencement of the proceedings.

The election adhered strictly to all democratic standards and protocols. Over the past two weeks, the Centre witnessed an intense election atmosphere, complete with candidate performances, campaigns, and rallies, reflecting the seriousness of a real electoral process.
