First disability-friendly model home initiated by Different Art Centre

22 February, 2025

Kanhangad: The first disability-friendly house under the Magik Home project, initiated by the Different Art Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, was handed over to its beneficiaries. Lyricist and poet Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri presented the house key to Devaprabha, a child with intellectual disabilities, and her mother, Varsha. The house was built at Iriya, Kanhangad, for the family from Moukode, Kasaragod.

The 650-square-foot home is designed to be fully accessible for individuals with disabilities. Key features of the house include ramps, doors wide enough for a stretcher to pass through, and disability-friendly toilets.

The beneficiaries of this initiative are Anu, his wife Varsha, and their two children. Anu was left bedridden following an accident three years ago. The family neither owned land nor a house before receiving this assistance.

At the key handover ceremony, Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri remarked that what had happened here was true humanitarian magic and that Gopinath Muthukad had once again proven that his mission extended beyond being an artist to a greater purpose of goodness.

P. Sreeja, President, Kodom Belur Grama Panchayat, Damodaran, Vice President, Jayashree, Standing Committee Chairperson, Gopinath Muthukad, Executive Director, Different Art Centre and Directors Mohanan, Shyla Thomas, Hariraj M.R, Jagadeeshan and Advocate Jayadali attended the event.

Philanthropist Bhaskaran, who donated the land, along with engineer Shivaprasad and supporter Radhakrishnan Chitra, were honored with mementos and shawls as a token of appreciation. Their services in making this home a reality were provided free of cost.
