Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Inaugurates "A Tribute to Democracy" installation at Different Art Centre

In an evocative affirmation of democratic ideals, the installation "A Tribute to Democracy" was unveiled on March 12, 2026 at the Different Art Centre, KINFRA Film and Video Park, Kazhakkoottam. Conceived as both a visual and civic statement, the work draws attention to the enduring faith of citizens in India’s democratic institutions and the shared responsibility that sustains them.

The installation stands as a powerful symbol of this faith. A human chain in the background reflects the collective responsibility of individuals in preserving democracy, with unity at its core. The prominently depicted ink-marked index finger highlights the constitutional right to vote and underscores the vital role each citizen plays in shaping the nation’s future.

The programme commenced at 3 pm with a welcome address by Dr Rathan U. Kelkar, IAS, Chief Electoral Officer of Kerala. This was followed by a rendition of the Election Commission’s theme song by students of the Different Art Centre.

The event was inaugurated by the Chief Election Commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, with Dr Kelkar formally unveiling the installation at his behest.

In his address, Mr Kumar reflected on the enduring significance of electoral participation. “Elections remain the most visible and vital expression of democratic life,” he said. He noted that Kerala’s strong tradition of civic engagement offers an example to the rest of the country and added that the forthcoming elections in the state would serve as a model for the nation in both participation and integrity.

Dr Kelkar emphasised the importance of sustained voter awareness and engagement. “Democracy flourishes where citizens are not only enfranchised but actively engaged,” he said. “Through initiatives such as this, we seek to foster a deeper sense of ownership among voters and to remind every citizen that each vote carries meaning and consequence.”

Gopinath Muthukad, noted illusionist and State SVEEP Icon of Kerala, joined the event online and spoke of the deeper responsibility inherent in democratic participation. “Democracy is a collective expression of hope and responsibility,” he said. “Every vote is a voice, and every citizen plays a part in shaping the future of the nation.”

The "Tribute to Democracy" stands as a reminder that the vitality of a nation rests not only in its institutions but also in the everyday acts of participation that give them life.
