Celebrating World Down Syndrome Day at Different Art Centre

21 March, 2025

Thiruvananthapuram: Actor Gopikrishnan K. Varma, the first actor with Down Syndrome to play a lead role in a commercial movie, graced the celebrations at the Different Art Centre (DAC) in Thiruvananthapuram today, in honour of World Down Syndrome Day. Gopikrishnan, known for his inspiring performance in the Malayalam films Thirike (2021) and Idiyan Chandu (2024), left a lasting impression on the children and guests as he expressed gratitude to his mother, Ranjani Varma, for her unwavering dedication in raising him against all odds. His heartfelt gesture of hugging his mother and draping the traditional ponnada over her was met with overwhelming admiration.

As the chief guest at the event, Gopikrishnan addressed an audience of differently-abled students, teachers, and parents from different institutions across Kerala. In his brief yet powerful speech, Gopikrishnan encouraged everyone to remain positive and continue working hard despite the challenges they face.

The event was part of DAC’s annual empowerment initiative, Step Up Day, which aims to foster social inclusion by promoting greater participation from the community in the lives of differently-abled children. Gopikrishnan’s personal story of overcoming obstacles in the entertainment industry serves as a beacon of hope, motivating children and parents alike to pursue their aspirations.

This year’s program also celebrated the return of astronaut Sunita Williams, marked by a symbolic lowering of her portrait to loud cheers from the children and guests.

During the event, Ranjani Varma shared her experiences as a caregiver and emphasized the importance of mothers not sacrificing their own dreams. She also highlighted the need for balance in the family, ensuring that siblings of children with Down Syndrome receive equal attention and support.

Disability rights advocate Gopinath Muthukad passionately advocated for celebrating World Down Syndrome Day with greater fervour. He stressed that such events play a crucial role in mainstreaming children with disabilities and fostering a more inclusive society.

The children in attendance were treated to a magical experience with a tour of Magic Planet, where they enjoyed a series of captivating magic shows and cultural activities.

Dr. Anil Kumar Nair, Director of Intervention at DAC, reminded parents that an extra chromosome could signify a uniquely gifted child, encouraging them to recognize the distinct abilities each child possesses. Sister Lissy Joseph, Principal of St. Martha’s Special School, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that it is society, rather than the children, that needs to open up and embrace greater acceptance.

World Down Syndrome Day serves as a reminder of the need for societal inclusion and awareness, and today’s event was a powerful example of how individuals like Gopikrishnan are leading the charge for greater visibility and opportunity for all.
